We cordially invite you to join us at The Carter Presidential Center in Atlanta, Georgia, for an unusual opportunity to meet other leading peacemakers, and share inspiration and practical ideas.
PeaceActs is a "grassroots" organization dedicated to the practice of peace as a practical way to achieve positive change in our world. Everyone can be a PEACEMAKER by practicing Acts of Peace which create positive solutions for the problems of conflict, injustice and apathy. This Forum will focus on five basic principles of peace: respect, share, care, love & advocate.
The opening session will feature Dr. Gerald Durley who will share his recent experiences of interfaith dialogue with “World Pilgrim” in Turkey, Jordan & Israel. Dr. Durley is a psychologist who was deeply involved in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960's. He was a member of the first U.S. Peace Corp to go to Nigeria, West Africa. He has been a university professor and administrator at Illinois University, Clark Atlanta University, and the Morehouse School of Medicine. He is currently Senior Pastor at Atlanta’s historic Providence Missionary Baptist Church which provides comprehensive human services for the community as well as a dynamic spiritual ministry.
Ambassadors Andrew Young and Carlton Masters have been invited to share information on reconciliation successes in Rwanda.
The morning presentation will focus on "advocacy" and give special attention to the need for pro-peace national policies and the role and purpose of the proposed U.S. Department of Peace. Civil rights leader, Congressman John Lewis, a sponsor of this legislation, will provide information about this bill. Wendy Green,Manging Director of the Peace Alliance, will describe the work of that organization in support of this legislation. Advocates who have helped to secure City Council Resolutions across the nation in support for this legislation will tell their success stories.
Katherine Josten,Founder and Director of the Global Arts Project for Peace will make a slide presentation during lunch. Peace Art created at a Peace Rally in Nothern California will also be on exhibit.
In the afternoon, grass roots community leaders will briefly describe their personal practices of peace and facilitate self-organizing work groups in which participants can exchange stories and meet others who share their passions. Using the “Open Space” process groups will form to share information on issues such as: Global Efforts to Help Children and Families; Early Education and the Promotion of Peace; Art as a Pathway to Peace; Conflict Resolution and Mediation; Protecting Human Rights; Volunteer Action; Students for Peace. An art exhibit and slide show will describe the way artists are promoting peace and connecting people of diverse backgrounds.
You are particularly invited to expand your peacemaking network, and share your inspiration and "lessons learned" with fellow peacemakers.
Additional forum leadership will include peace practitioners who are change agents in their own spheres of influence as well as nationally known figures. The list includes:
• Charles Black, civil rights activist, community development specialist and professional actor;
• Willard Davis, teacher, minister, singer/guitarist, peace promoter, Executive Director of the Attitudinal Healing Network in San Jose, CA;
